Name That Shifter, No. 49: 1984 Toyota Van

On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. A few of you figured out it belongs to the Toyota Van sold here in the 1980s. The first to correctly identify it as a 1984 model was Quen47, who will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The Van—yes, it was simply named “Van”— pictured here is from our June 1984 issue. Simple name notwithstanding, the space-oddball Toyota was anything but dull in execution. The Van boasted a mid-mounted, 90-hp, 2.0-liter four that powered the rear wheels. The interior of our test car featured two sunrooves, dual-zone climate control, and a drink cooler just ahead of the shifter on the center console. Some of you commented on the woefully inadequate-looking trio of “cupholders” next to the shifter; not quite full-on cupholders, the “coasters” nonetheless were intended to hold drinks—for how long, we’re not sure. One thing certain not to disturb any in-cabin drinks was the Van’s acceleration, or rather its lack thereof: the Toyota sauntered from 0 to 60 in 14.2 seconds.
