2012 Buick Regal GS vs. 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design: Two Comfort Kings Consult the Book of Changes

2012 Buick Regal GS vs. 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design

Depending on whom you ask, China is either a rising dragon or a paper tiger. But one thing is for certain: The Middle Kingdom is a monster car market. Eighteen million cars, trucks, and buses were sold there in 2010, a jump of 32 percent from 2009. Another certainty is that both Buick and Volvo owe their continuances to China. The former due to a revered brand status that dates back to when that country’s various heads of state were choosing Flint’s finest and the latter due to Geely’s purchase last year.

On our shores, both Buick and Volvo share a certain—how shall we put this?—aimlessness, and some of that confusion is evident in the two cars in this test.

We’ll start with the Buick Regal GS. The Regal is essentially a rebadged Opel Insignia that was meant to be a Saturn. And the GS is a performance Buick. Like we said, confusing. Given China’s penchant for grandiose and wordy proclamations, we’re guessing this top-o’-the-line Regal GS would be described along the lines of ?“Most Glorious Performance and Sporty Feeling Turbocharging for Passenger Delight.”

The direct-injected, turbocharged four remains essentially the same as in the Regal Turbo, but the boost is turned up to 20, an increase of 5 psi. This makes for 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque (increases of 50 and 35, respectively). The GS also comes with larger Brembo front brakes, a retuned suspension, and some exterior enhancements to distinguish it from baser Regals. Our test car adds sharp 20-inch wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero tires, a $700 option. Other enhancements to the $35,310 base price are a sunroof ($1000), an upgraded stereo with navigation ($1145), and White Diamond Tricoat paint ($495), which, in addition to looking nice, has the curious effect of making us think of Elizabeth Taylor. All this brings us to an as-tested price of ?$38,650.

The S60 is to Volvo as the Regal is to Buick, an effort to give a staid nameplate a fresher, sportier persona. Or perhaps we should say: “Prestigious Brand Enhancement of Magnificent Styling and Drive Performance.” The R-Design takes things a step further than the midline S60, the 300-hp T6 AWD, with a reprogrammed engine computer that adds 1.4 psi of boost (a total of 14.5) and 25 horsepower. Out goes the S60 T6’s adjustable chassis system; in go stiffer springs, a strut-tower brace, and quicker-responding monotube shocks. The R-Design will set you back $43,375, or $4600 more than the all-wheel-drive S60 T6. Add in the $2700 Multimedia package (navigation, rearview camera, and upgraded stereo) and the $800 Climate package (which includes heated seats and rain-sensing wipers), and you get to a heady $46,875 as-tested price.

In keeping with the Chinese theme, we drove to Chicago’s Chinatown, with additional stops at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan, and the C/D 10Best loop. Like China, both of these cars symbolize great potential. Inspired by that country’s rich philosophical heritage, our review borrows the style of the classic Chinese text, the I Ching, or Book of Changes. But unlike China’s supposed Communist egalitarianism, we have picked a winner.

Buick LaCrosse GL Announced for L.A.: Choccachino’d All Over the Place

Buick LaCrosse GL concept
The press release reads like it’s announcing a new Bentley flagship: The designers “took inspiration from the burnished metal of antique jewelry, ombré patina on vintage guitars, and flocked lining of keepsake boxes.” They “looked to the understated elegance of classic club chairs and [the] contours of windswept sand dunes” in crafting the French-stitched seats. “And their use of smooth suede for the headliner is designed to invite one’s touch like a favorite pair of gloves.”

The Continental: Opel’s New Hot Hatch Could Become a Buick, a Name that Stinks, and Rebadged Commercial Vans

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Opel’s future is far from secure, but the German GM division is stepping on the accelerator regardless. The sporty, low Astra GTC—which could well be offered in the U.S. as a Buick model—will be crowned by an OPC version that produces 276 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power comes from a 2.0-liter four and is transmitted only to the front wheels; top speed is a governed 155 mph. OPC stands for “Opel Performance Center”—and in true OPC fashion, the stylistic improvements forfeit any subtlety of the basic design in favor of a “boy racer” look.

If the Astra GTC becomes a success, it will be a much-needed boost for Opel’s standing within General Motors. The mid-size Insignia, rebadged as the Buick Regal, is selling well in China, but lumbers significantly below expectations in the U.S. At least it succeeds in bringing a new and younger set of customers to the somewhat geriatric brand.

Mitsubishi is launching the PX-MiEV II concept car at the Tokyo motor show in a few weeks. I feel bad for Mitsubishi’s European staff. “MiEV” stands for “Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle,” but in the German language it is pronounced like “Mief,” which means “bad smell.” Is Mitsubishi referring to the emissions produced by those power stations that provide all of the energy needed by our “green” vehicles? After the i-MiEV naming disaster, there will be more hand-wringing at Mitsubishi Motors Europe.

BMW initiated the idea of the “art cars” in the 1970s, and it has served as a source of inspiration for carmakers across the board. Artist Freddy Reitz, who specializes in pop art, has created a Smart wrapped in the pattern of a well-weathered U.S. flag. Daimler is planning to make a small series of these cars, which will hit the road in early 2012. Details are not yet disclosed; Reitz’s original model is powered by a 70-hp gasoline engine.

Another special edition: Land Rover is adding the Defender “Experience Bolivia.” Limited to 140 units, it is painted metallic silver and equipped with extraordinary options such as ABS and air conditioning. Furthermore, it has an electric winch and a ladder to the roof. Power comes from a tractor-like 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel making 120 hp. We’re glad the original Land Rover is alive and kicking, and we hope the company comes up with a worthy replacement once the Defender goes out of production in three years or so.

Land Rover is also improving the Discovery and the Range Rover Sport, which share a common platform, with a more powerful V-6 turbo-diesel that makes 252 hp. No technological changes for the classic Range Rover, which carries on into its last year of production, still on the architecture of the first-generation BMW X5. An all-new, fourth generation will be launched next fall. Will it remain the world’s dominant luxury SUV? That’s not clear anymore—Bentley is aiming for the empty niche above the Range Rover.

The commercial vehicle world is different from the auto realm; brand image plays only a very minor role, and rebadging competitors’ vehicles is standard procedure. Take the Volkswagen Crafter, for example: It’s not much more than a slightly modified Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. But at least Wolfsburg is trying to best the Sprinter with an all-wheel-drive Crafter, converted by Austrian aftermarket company Achleitner and sold through VW. The conversion costs a whopping €19,950, which is over $27,000 at current exchange rates.

Opel, on the other hand, shows very little ambition with its Combo light commercial vehicle. The previous generation was based on Opel’s own Corsa, but with its own distinct styling, while the new European-market Combo is nothing but a rebadged Fiat Doblò. The Combo is just as ugly as the Doblò, too. It’s interesting to see GM team up with Fiat-Chrysler on another project, years after the cooperation between GM and Fiat went down in flames.

G54: Troy Trepanier Builds a Double-Brown ’54 Buick with German Guts

We’re getting good at sniffing out AMG engines under hoods where they weren’t originally installed. Witness yesterday’s pair of Mechatronik-fettled Benz classics and this latest Rad Ride by Troy Trepanier, a ’54 Buick with G55 AMG running gear. G54, as it’s called, was finished about a week ago and is making its public debut here at SEMA.

The two-tone brown paint on this custom caught our eye at first; it wasn’t until we saw the Mercedes head unit, shifter, gauges, and switchgear inside that the car’s split personality became apparent. Hal Wing, the man who commissioned the car, told us he approached Trepanier with the idea of marrying German engineering with American iron. Wing chose the G55’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 but left the vehicle selection to the car’s builder. Trepanier tells us the most difficult part of the build was the wiring; specifically, getting the G55’s computers to believe that they were still hooked to a four-wheel-drive system instead of the car’s Detroit Truetrac rear diff.

AMG engine or no, we’re not going to argue with anything that looks this good, but it’s the details that really make it. A shallow top-stitched leather dash recalls that of the G-wagen and is complemented by Mercedes-grade birdseye maple throughout. The custom wheels are styled after iconic flat five-spoke Benz rims of the ’90s and are finished by original Buick center caps. Trepanier even painted them with an AMG-esque Buick logo. Neat stuff.

Oh, and Wing made sure we noted the clever badging, including a combination Mercedes three-pointed star/Buick tri-shield emblem atop the engine and a G54 badge on the trunklid. So here they are.
